Brenden Aaronson seems to be starting to turn a corner after a dismal 18 months after winning his starting spot back in Union Berlin’s side – and Leeds United target Mark McKenzie has praised him.

Aaronson, 23, joined Leeds with his stock at an all-time high after impressing with Salzburg. A two-time Austrian champion, the USA star had impressed in the Champions League before his £25m Leeds move.

But he struggled at Leeds, scoring one goal in 40 – his lack of physicality often cited. His form in the first half of the season at Union has not gone to plan either, failing to score or assist in his 20 appearances.

He has even been sent off. But, after the turn of the year, he scored in a friendly against Bielefeld and got a start in Union’s first competitive fixture of 2024 – which ended in a solid 0-0 draw with Freiburg.

Aaronson played 69 minutes before being subbed off. He took to Instagram on Monday evening, posting a number of pictures from the “2024 season so far”. He will be hoping it is the year he now fights back.

Meanwhile, Leeds have been linked with an £8.5m move for McKenzie. A player that came through at Philadelphia with Aaronson – McKenzie has spoke of his love of playing with the Leeds-owned man.

The Whites could be in the market for a new central defender with Charlie Cresswell’s future up in the air. Liam Cooper is out of contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to be given a new contract.

McKenzie could be the man that arrives at Leeds and certainly, he would get a glowing reference from Aaronson given their bond. On Monday night, McKenzie responded to Aaronson’s new Instagram post.
