Midfielder rejects Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham for second-tier side, after leaving Leeds on a free

The Daily Record claim Stuart McKinstry has chosen to join second-tier Scottish side Queen’s Park on a free transfer after exiting Leeds United in the summer – amid interest from Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham.

The 21-year-old has been without a club since his Leeds contract expired in the summer. It comes after he spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Motherwell – the side we signed him from, back in July 2019.

Scotland U21 star McKinstry played 44 times for our second string, and twice for the first team – a sub outing away at Tottenham under Marcelo Bielsa, and a penalty shootout win over Fulham back in 2021.

But his six goal involvements in 25 games at Motherwell was not enough to win a new Leeds deal – with McKinstry losing his place in the side towards the end of 2022-23. He left Elland Road on a free transfer.

Now, the Record claim he has picked his new side. He has chosen to remain in his home country, and join Championship side Queen’s Park. That is despite interest from down south, including Wrexham.

Indeed, Wrexham – owned by Hollywood stars Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – were one of three clubs to show interest in the Scottish winger. Minnows Forest Green Rovers too, as well as in-form Gillingham.

All three sides are in League Two, with Rovers relegated after a woeful stint under the guise of Duncan Ferguson. But McKinstry has chosen to stay in Scotland with Queen’s Park. No confirmation as of yet.

A player that Bielsa said had “great character”. Queen’s Park have made a woeful start to the season, sitting in seventh of a 10-time League, losing five league games in a row after winning previous three.
