Middlesbrough midfielder Dan Barlaser says his side were unlucky not to take anything from Elland Road during Saturday’s clash against Leeds United – and thinks his side should have had a penalty.
Leeds secured a second win in a row, and an eighth victory in their last 10 games with a 3-2 win over Michael Carrick’s side. Boro took the lead early, but we were winning 2-1 seven minutes into the game.
Dan James and Cree Summerville cancelled out Emmanuel Latte Lath’s opener. Georginio Rutter then won a penalty off of sub Matt Clarke, which Joel Piroe tucked into the corner. But Boro got a second.
That all came in the first half. The second half saw Boro go down to 10 men, but also come close to an equaliser – Sammy Silvera hitting the post, Joe Rodon with a quite remarkable block on the rebound.
There were also claims from those of a Boro persuasion to see the referee point towards the penalty spot for a foul on the impressive Matt Crooks – but it was ruled out. Barlaser spoke to BBC Radio Leeds.
“Disappointed we haven’t come away with anything. We went down to 10, but still had decent chances. We should have had a penalty, same as theirs, the post. Unfortunate not to come away with anything.”

It would have been soft and anyway, there were question marks over whether it was in the penalty area. One of those that if it had been given and VAR was in play, it would not have been overturned, for Boro.
But, a penalty was never going to be given if the on-field decision was no spot kick. Boro can feel hard done by, given they hit the post and had a red – but Leeds were the better side and worthy of the win.
