Leeds United midfielder Alfie McCalmont is certainly making a case for his future at Elland Road while on loan with League Two side Oldham Athletic – as he adds a goalscoring touch to his game that many did not know he had, netting his seventh of the season on Tuesday night. His post on Instagram, though, attracted plenty of reaction, including a comment from Michael Owen.
McCalmont – who turned 21 on Thursday – has struggled for regular game time for Leeds as cover for Kalvin Phillips or further forward in midfield. Despite that, he has starred for the senior side and even earnt himself a senior Northern Ireland cap – and now has scored an impressive seven goals during his 30 Oldham appearances while on loan during 2020-21.
His seventh was the best of the lot. Oldham had a corner and initially cleared with a header to the edge of the Exeter box, McCalmont produced a stunning left-footed volley that flew into the top corner of the Exeter net off the bar. It helped Oldham produce a 2-1 win earlier this week and he posted a video of the goal on Instagram, somewhat showing off.
McCalmont’s future remains an interesting one. His excellent form for Leeds will have tempted plenty of other managers in the Football League – perhaps at League One level or even in the Championship. At Leeds, it is still probably bit too early, but he does have a contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2024. Another loan is likely this summer.
Liverpool and England legend Owen commented on his post, with McCalmont represented by the footballing agency that Owen owns. The ex-Real Madrid man applauded his strike, while the likes of Jamie Shackleton and others also applauded him – questioning were his left foot appeared from.
