Ethan Ampadu has been handed the captain’s armband and despite only joining Leeds United a year ago, it was the obvious choice for Daniel Farke to appoint Ampadu.
That is testament to Ampadu’s importance and quality he has shown over the last year, starting 54 of 55 matches in all competitions. He was rested for just one game, the FA Cup replace against Plymouth.
His aura, his on-pitch leadership and his experience for a player of just 23 is eye-catching. On Saturday, he was one of Leeds’ best players again despite returning to midfield having recently played in defence.
Certainly, Ampadu is quickly looking like the bargain of Farke’s era since Leeds paid Chelsea a fee of £7m to sign him from Stamford Bridge in 2023. If Leeds are to do anything this season, Ampadu will be crucial.

Bridges says Ampadu’s experience at just 23 surprised him
Already in his short career, Ampadu has played in England, Germany and Italy. Coming through at Chelsea, he has been on loan at Sheffield United, Leipzig, Spezia and Venezia before joining Leeds.
He’s already captained Wales having clocked up a massive 52 caps for his country, while clocking up 170 appearances competitively at club level. Bridges says it surprised him, just how much he’s played.
“When he signed, I knew he was a leader and a great player. I didn’t realise at such a young age I didn’t realise just how many games he had under his belt. In a captain, you need someone – is he going to start?
“Yes he is. Good in the dressing room? You’ve seen that. He’s got that aura and chrisma. A very good decision. The best thing about him, his performances whether that is defence or midfield,” Bridges said.

Ampadu even showed leadership in Joe Rodon signing for Leeds
Not only is Ampadu showing huge character on the pitch and playing with his chest stuck out, but the midfielder is even having an effect when it comes to Leeds making transfers, namely defender Rodon.
He says that he did not stop pestering Rodon to sign permanently at Elland Road and eventually, the defender was added for £10m from Tottenham largely thanks to Archie Gray’s move to the London club.
“He will tell you, I was on him a lot. I’m pleased now Leeds fans can stop asking me ‘Is he coming back?’ I had that quite a bit in the summer. It was pleasing to see him finally coming back through the doors.”
