Kalvin Phillips has been sensational. Churning out some top-drawer displays, the Leeds ace has played almost every minute of England’s seven games at Euro 2020. While England lost in the final, Phillips was excellent. Michael Bridges has reacted to a somewhat incredible stat on Phillips.
The 25-year-old took his tally of England caps to 15 when he was named alongside Declan Rice in midfield once again. Phillips and Rice were tasked with keeping Italy’s midfield trio of Marco Verratti, Jorginho and Nicolo Barella. But both did it to near-perfection, as the game went to penalties.
With England’s strike through Luke Shaw in the second minute cancelled out by Leonardo Bonucci – neither side could score a winner. In the penalty shootout, we got one, as Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka all missed. Heartbreak for England and Kalvin, but a positive step.
Euro 2020: What has Bridges said about Leeds star Phillips?
It was England’s first ever final in the European Championships, and first final at a major tournament in 55 since England won the World Cup in 1966. So, plenty to hold your head up high, Kalvin. But there is something else he should be proud of – one that will leave Marcelo Bielsa delighted.
At Euro 2020, only one player ran more than Phillips during the entire tournament. He ran 15.7 kilometres during the final, running a whopping 83 in just seven games. Ex-Leeds striker Michael Bridges raved about Phillips and his work rate at Euro 2020, stating he should be proud.
