Max Wober and Willy Gnonto doubtful for Leeds’ trip to Arsenal

Both Max Wober and Willy Gnonto are doubtful for Leeds United’s clash with Arsenal, but the club hope that neither has suffered a serious injury.

Some of the optimism Leeds went into the international break with has evaporated.

Max Wober came off for Austria during the first-half of their win over Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, Willy Gnonto had to be replaced before the break in Italy’s victory over Malta. And The Athletic is now reporting that the pair are doubtful for the trip to Arsenal this weekend.

Of course, if there were two players Leeds fans would want wrapped up in cotton wool while away, it was surely Wober and Gnonto.

Wober and Gnonto doubtful for Arsenal game

The centre-back has been an inspired signing for the Whites. It does not feel like a coincidence that neither Robin Koch or Junior Firpo either side of him have been better during their time at Elland Road since his arrival.

And obviously, Gnonto’s ability is no secret. He is someone who had the potential to cause the Premier League leaders a few problems.

So it would be a big blow to not have either at the Emirates.

Having said that, the result against Arsenal is not going to decide Leeds’ season. So it is good news that The Athletic is also reporting that Leeds do not believe that Gnonto or Wober will be sidelined for too long.

The positive for Javi Gracia is that he now appears to have real depth in attack. Neither Luis Sinisterra or Georginio Rutter were used in the win at Wolves. Both Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo are approaching full sharpness again.

And Gnonto has not actually completed 90 minutes under the new boss.

Wober’s absence may hurt more. Liam Cooper or Pascal Struijk could come back in. But neither has played a lot in recent weeks. So it is going to be a huge task for whoever replaces the 25-year-old.
