Max Gradel reacts to Leeds United signing Josuha Guilavogui on Elland Road deal until next summer

Leeds United have made a move to solve their lack of cover at centre-back and central midfield in the form of signing Josuha Guilavogui, after the Frenchman had become a free agent.

The 34-year-old was still looking for a new club after leaving Bundesliga side Mainz in the summer on a free. A seven-time France star that boasts Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg, St. Etienne and Bordeaux on his CV.

Daniel Farke was keen on signing a player that would solve the injuries sustained by Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu in central midfield, but also able to cover in defence with Max Wober also undergoing surgery.

Guilavogui is a player that has clocked up over 250 games for Wolfsburg, and even Nadiem Amiri helped save Guilavogui’s life in March. It is unclear if Guilavogui will be involved in Saturday’s trip to Bristol City.

Josuha Guilavogui posts on Instagram after joining Leeds United

Speaking after signing a deal until the end of the season, Guilavogui said that he was desperate to join Leeds after his agent told him of boss Farke’s interest in his services, ending his search for a new club.

He has now taken to Instagram to speak to fans, and is clearly excited judging by his post. His caption includes: “Today, I have stars in my eyes and I just want to enjoy this amazing moment with all of YOU.

“It’s now up to me to give my best and pay tribute to all those who wore this jersey before me. It is both an honour and a tremendous responsibility,” Guilavogui said to Leeds fans, in his post on Instagram.

Gradel and Guilavogui played alongside each other while at Ligue 1 side St. Etienne. Of course, Gradel remains an iconic figure at Leeds having helped Simon Grayson’s gain promotion from League One.

These days, 113-time Ivory Coast star Gradel is with his fourth Turkish side after spells at Sivasspor, Gaziantep, Sakaryespor and now second-tier outfit Amedspor. He posted on Guilavogui’s Instagram.

Whether Guilavogui will be fit to go straight into the side remains to be seen, having last played 90 minutes back in March. It is likely Farke will want to see him train first, before bringing him in at Leeds.
