Phil Hay delivered a report on Leeds United’s failure to get a deal over the line for Norwich City right-back Max Aarons on The Athletic – and having posted it on Twitter, ex-Elland Road striker Matt Smith posted a hilarious reply.
Aarons, 23, was all set to complete a move to Leeds with a medical and a hotel all pencilled in for the 23-time U21 England star. But, Bournemouth came knocking and hijacked a move at a very late stage. He is off to the Cherries.
Huge frustration and as Hay writes in his Athletic piece, one that will hurt Leeds boss Farke. The German gave the Norwich star his professional debut at Norwich and the majority of his 213 games for our Championship rivals.
But instead, Aarons has decided to snub Farke and Leeds and favour a move to the Premier League with Andoni Iraola’s side. Responding to Hay’s story on Twitter, ex-Leeds striker Smith recalled his own Leeds transfer saga.

Most Leeds fans remember the Smith transfer story. In the summer of 2013, he joined Leeds from Oldham and enjoyed a very decent 12 months – scoring 14 goals, laying on seven assists in 48 games. But it only lasted a year.
Fulham came calling in the final moments of the 2014 summer window. With the window closing down, the Leeds Twitter account posted “don’t go to bed just yet” – suggesting Leeds were about to confirm a new, unknown arrival.
Instead, the only update forthcoming was the news of Smith moving to Fulham. A phrase that has since been used as the title of Adam Pope’s BBC Radio Leeds podcast. Leeds and Smith will reunite when we take on Salford City.
