Leeds United have announced that Luke Ayling has extended his contract at Elland Road by a further 12 months which will keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2024 – prompting reaction from both Mateusz Klich and Rodrigo.

Ayling, 31, has been crucial for Leeds in the last few games – starting seven Premier League games in a row. Now, he has confirmed he will be remaining at Elland Road for an eighth season, joining the club back in the summer of 2016.

The defender has arguably been our best player since Jesse Marsch was sacked, and Michael Skubala has been given the reigns as Leeds manager. But Ayling’s long-term future at Elland Road was in doubt – his deal was expiring in June.

Now, Ayling has committed his immediate future at Elland Road. He has agreed to an extension, keeping him on the books until June 2024. It means he will at least remain for another 18 months. Leeds confirmed the news on Instagram.

Leeds announce Ayling contract, reaction from Klich and Rodrigo

Without doubt, the right thing to do. Even if Ayling does not start next season for Leeds, having that influence in and around the dressing room is key. Victor Orta said after his new deal that his importance at Leeds is “immeasurable”.

Ayling is likely to start once again on Saturday when the Whites take to the field in Skubala’s third game. A tough clash against Everton at Goodison. A game which could have a big say when it comes to relegation at the end of the season.

The ex-Bristol City, Yeovil and Arsenal man is well-liked at Leeds and his new deal earned reaction from Klich – who has since joined MLS side DC United – and injured striker Rodrigo. Both were delighted for the Leeds defender to sign on.
