Leeds striker Mateo Joseph has told Spanish newspaper Marca that he is studying business management at University alongside playing for Leeds – after he was handed both his first-team debut, and Premier League debut last week.
Joseph, 19, joined Leeds from Espanyol in January. He struggled initially, but this season, his form has dramatically improved. The youngster has scored 12 goals in 11 games for the club’s Under-21 side, including three hat-tricks.
It saw Joseph start for Leeds last week. Although the Whites suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Midlands side in the Carabao Cup, the Leeds youngsters impressed – namely Joseph, alongside Sonny Perkins and Darko Gyabi. He was impressive.
Then, after Tottenham had gone 4-3 up, Jesse Marsch handed Joseph his Premier League debut on Saturday. The young star gave an interview to Marca and quite amazingly, spoke of how he is undergoing a degree in business.
“I go to train in the morning. When I finish, I do the things in the university. I’m studying business management. I also watch a lot of videos of training sessions and games to see what I’m doing well and improve,” Joseph said.

Joseph is deeply impressive. Not only on the pitch, and his meteoric rise of late in terms of going from struggling in the 21’s, to being the main man. But now, clearly, off of it too. To be studying a degree shows the youngster’s attitude.
It is quite rare. Ben Davies at Tottenham, albeit a decade older than Joseph and currently at the World Cup with Wales, graduated with a 2:1 in a similar degree – business and economics. It is creeping into football, and very encouraging.
Leeds have prided themselves on bringing in players that are good on the pitch, but nice people off of it. Adding to the club’s family-like environment. Joseph is still only a youngster at Leeds, but this is another sign he has a big future.
