Archie Gray has been a revelation. Leeds United will have known that they had a wonderkid on their hands but not many might have predicted the impact he has already had on this side, this season.
Coming into the season, Gray was yet to play a senior game for the club. Jesse Marsch had used him during the pre-season tour of Australia in 2022. But, Gray picked up injuries and returned with the 21’s.
This summer, Gray continued to work his way into the side – featuring regularly under Daniel Farke. But even then, it was a surprise to see him start in the opener – a 2-2 draw with Cardiff. He has remained.
Gray has started nine of our 10 matches in all competitions, rested last time out in a win over Watford. He has been exceptional, forming a formidable partnership in the middle of the park with Ethan Ampadu.
Not many know him better than Mark Jackson – our former U23 boss. He predicted in the summer that Gray would have an impact this season, and he has done that – and more so. Here is what Jackson said.
“What really accelerated Archie’s progression was when he had a growth spurt and began dominate the pitch,” Jackson told the Daily Mail Plus. “That’s a real strength of Archie’s now – he can go box to box.
“I played with his dad at Leeds and Andy was always very fit, as was Eddie during his career. I think it’s a given he’ll make his debut this season. I certainly envisage Archie impacting Leeds’ squad this year.”

Gray’s ability to shrug off opponents physically, and in terms of quality – that are 10 and 15 years older than him – has been unerring. Incredible. For a player of 17, he looks like he has been playing for years.
Leeds have a serious talent on their hands. One that is destined to have a Premier League career and possibly, win some England caps. What Leeds must do, is align themselves with Gray’s ambitions.
