Former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is now an advanced talks about becoming the new head coach of Uruguay.
Bielsa remains out of work after leaving Elland Road just over a year ago. Of course, he has come close to securing a Premier League return, with the Argentinian flying into England for talks with Everton before they appointed Sean Dyche.
There were plenty of Leeds fans who also hoped that Bielsa would return after the decision was taken to sack Jesse Marsch. But deep down however, it was probably the right call for all parties for Leeds to look elsewhere.
The good news for those of us looking forward to seeing Marcelo Bielsa back in football is that he is now in advanced talks over his next job.
Bielsa one step away from Uruguay job
According to TyC Sports, Bielsa is one step away from taking over the Uruguay national team. If he does take over, he is likely to sign a contract until the end of the qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup. And obviously, he would likely stay on if they make the tournament being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
There is so much talent within the Uruguay squad. Obviously, the likes of Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani had been stalwarts of the side for years previously.
It looks to be the likes of Fede Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur and Darwin Nunez who will help lead the side over the next few years.
And of course, Bielsa is no stranger to managing South American nations. In fact, Uruguay would be the third country he has taken charge of, having previously worked with Argentina and Chile.
For some in Europe, it was his work with Chile – along with his subsequent spell with Athletic – which really made many sit up and take notice of Bielsa.
Obviously, many Leeds fans will follow his fortunes wherever he goes next. Seeing him with another international side with several exciting players with world-class potential is a tantalising thought.
