Marcelo Bielsa has delivered an update on crocked Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi in his pre-Wigan press conference – and it’s bad news.

The 30-year-old suffered an injury 27 minutes into Leeds’ 2-0 win over Ipswich Town. It was just Berardi’s second game back from a previous injury.

It saw the defender miss Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, with Stuart Dallas replacing him at right-back. Bielsa was quoted by Leeds Live as saying that he is unsure when Berardi will return.

“A lot of time. It’s not a simple injury,” Bielsa said. “I don’t know how to explain it, the level of the tendon, the muscle, went to the other body. The muscle had turned around the tendon.

“But I will ask the head of medicine to give you the information because I know I made a mistake explaining it. Maybe I’m not precise enough.”

Leeds have little cover in defence with Luke Ayling ruled out for two months, while Lewie Coyle and Liam Kitching remain on loan.
