Manchester United eyeing move for 22-year-old Leeds player

Manchester United are eyeing Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as the long-term successor for David De Gea, according to a report from The Sun.

Meslier has been coming in for criticism after the Whites’ loss to Everton on Saturday. The Frenchman made a terrible error which allowed Seamus Coleman to score from the tightest of angles and settle the game on a miserable day for Michael Skubala’s men.

Nevertheless, the 22-year-old has had an outstanding season for Leeds. So it comes as absolutely no surprise that he is attracting interest.

Manchester United eye Meslier as De Gea’s successor

Journalist Darren Lewis recently suggested that teams up and down the country want the youngster. And it seems that one of those sides is indeed Manchester United.

According to The Sun, Erik ten Hag’s men are working on agreeing a new deal with De Gea. And they are prepared to offer him a contract worth £250,000-a-week.

They want to keep the Spaniard, who currently earns £375,000-a-week. However, they are also keeping one eye on his future successor. And The Sun suggests that Meslier is the player they want.

They are happy to delay a potential move until they are able to offer Meslier the number one spot. But The Sun notes that that may become a problem if Leeds are relegated this season.

Certainly, we can expect to have no chance of holding onto Meslier if we return to the Championship.

Obviously, most Leeds fans are pretty realistic when it comes to how long we will keep Meslier. He is a special talent who looks set to go right to the very top. He is rapidly approaching a century of Premier League appearances already.

However, there are a handful of clubs the Leeds hierarchy should not contemplate selling our star players to. And Manchester United is obviously one of those.

It has happened before. So unfortunately, we cannot rule it out entirely. But it would be nice if Meslier emulated Raphinha and took that next step elsewhere – when he does decide to go.
