Ian Poveda made his debut for Colombia on Sunday after the Leeds United attacker was called-up this month, starting in a 1-0 win over Venezuela – prompting Luke Ayling and Junior Firpo to react.
The 23-year-old has been used as a back-up option by Daniel Farke this season – but he has certainly been more involved than he might have expected, after a solid pre-season. He is in Farke’s Leeds plans.
That could change come January if the Whites bring in a couple of loan additions. Indeed, Poveda has only managed six Championship appearances, and only one start – in the 1-0 loss to Birmingham City.
However, it came as a bit of a surprise when London-born Poveda was called up to represent Colombia in December fixtures against Venezuela and Mexico. It is almost a Colombia B-team, given the timing.
It is not a usual international break, meaning clubs had to give permission to let players go. Leeds man Luis Sinisterra is not involved presumably as Bournemouth did not allow it. Poveda started on Sunday.
A 1-0 win over Venezuela with Poveda involved in the build up of the goal, Andresa Ferro scoring an own goal. He took to Instagram after the match, underlying his joy at having made his debut for Colombia.

Former Manchester City star Poveda has won praise for his form in a Colombia shirt, lasting 80 minutes. It is likely Poveda will play against Mexico on Sunday, which will see Poveda miss another two games.
Sunderland away, tonight. Then, Coventry at Elland Road on Saturday. Poveda is likely to be back in time for the huge clash against Ipswich Town, two days before Christmas. Ayling and Firpo praised Poveda.
