‘Let’s see’: Manager of £15m star talks his star midfielder’s future amid Leeds reports

Coventry City boss Mark Robins has been quoted by Lancs Live as saying Gustavo Hamer is “obviously” the subject of interest after and claimed he was the Championship’s best midfielder last term – amid interest from Leeds United.

Hamer, 26, has spent the last three seasons at Coventry but it was his form in 2022-23 that saw him come alight. It was a year in which he combined with another Leeds-linked player, Viktor Gyokeres, firing Coventry into the top six.

Playing 45 games, Hamer had a hand in 21 goals. Scoring 11, creating 10. Leeds have let Brenden Aaronson go on loan to Union Berlin, and Daniel Farke is renowned for liking a 4-2-3-1 system – in which he has a superstar no.10.

Emi Buendia was the man at Norwich, in both of his promotions from the Championship. Hamer has plenty of clubs after his signature. Phil Hay told the The Square Ball that Leeds are interested in him. We are not alone in pursuit.

Premier League clubs Fulham, Burnley and Nottingham Forest all want to sign Hamer, according to a report from TeamTalk. Now, Robins has commented on his Brazil-born star – saying he is hopeful that Hamer signs a new deal.

“There’s speculation about Gus but it’s obvious speculation. He was the best midfield player in the Championship last season – 100%. Everyone loves him because his attitude is good. He is coming into the last year of his contract.

“So he knows where he sits, but he also knows that we want him and would like him to stay for at least another 12 months, and then let’s see where we are after that,” Robins said this week, amid Leeds interest and other clubs.

Leeds are already losing the battle to sign Hamer. You would argue that even with Leeds not actually selling any players for big money yet, that the 49ers would be able to afford him. But it is interest from Premier League clubs.

If signed by Burnley, you would imagine he starts. At Forest and Fulham, perhaps it is less obvious with Morgan Gibbs-White and Andreas Pereira at both clubs. Maybe it is the bargaining chip Leeds have – that he is first choice.
