Leeds United have agreed terms with youngster Alfie McCalmont, and the teenager is one of the most exciting prospects to come through the Thorp Arch system in recent years.

McCalmont, 18, has signed a contract with Leeds that will see him remain at Elland Road until 2021. It is more than he deserves, after an excellent start to the season with the Under-23 side.

The Northern Irish youngster has impressed onlooking Leeds fans with his performances for the second string. He has been crucial as the Whites sit top of the Professional Development League.

Small in size, McCalmont has shown he can play either at the base of the midfield or in attacking midfield. He has excellent technique, being able to dictate play in front of an opponents’ midfield or between the lines.

Short and long-range passing, ability to create chances and more than willing to get stuck in, McCalmont has an excellent chance to become just another example of Thorp Arch’s superb academy.

Marcelo Bielsa has given chances to the likes of Will Huffer, Clarke Odour, Jordan Stevens, Jack Clarke, Jamie Shackleton a chance. Now, McCalmont could be next.

He has certainly shown the kind of promise that could make him Leeds’ next Lewis Cook in years to come. This time, fans will be hoping he stays.
