Leeds United were particularly keen on signing Rico Lewis on loan this summer, but Manchester City have rejected more than a dozen approaches from various clubs for the youngster.
That is according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (30/7; page 65), which notes that the 18-year-old is about to sign a new long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Rico Lewis enjoyed a breakout season last year, making 23 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s men in all competitions. One of those came when he played extremely well in City’s 3-1 victory over Leeds at Elland Road just after the World Cup break.

And it seems that that display may have stuck with the Whites. The Sun on Sunday (30/7; page 65) reports that Leeds were one of the teams particularly keen on signing Lewis for the campaign.
In fact, Manchester City rejected more than 12 approaches from a number of sides – also including Everton, Southampton and Brighton.
It appears that Guardiola wants the teenager in his plans during the coming campaign. The Manchester City boss recently lauded how ‘intelligent‘ the defender is.
Lewis would have undoubtedly been an outstanding addition for Daniel Farke’s side. While he mostly played at right-back last season, he is also capable of playing on the left and in holding midfield.
And there is absolutely no question that Leeds look incredibly light at left-back – still – and in the middle of the park heading into the new Championship season.
Perhaps it may be a situation clubs revisit in January if Lewis does not play quite as much as Guardiola had expected.
Hopefully by that stage, Leeds are in a position where Manchester City would see the merit in sending one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League to Elland Road for a spell.
