Leeds United were interested in raiding Burnley for midfielder Josh Brownhill in the summer but he remain with Vincent Kompany’s side and has since captained the Clarets in the Premier League.

Brownhill, 27, is approaching four years with the Lancashire club – having a hand in 17 goals during 48 games for Burnley last season. He was crucial in Burnley gaining promoted back to the Premier League.

TeamTalk said in the summer that Leeds were one of a number of clubs eyeing Brownhill. Wolves, Boro, Palace, Everton and Leicester were also said to have shown interest. His deal at Burnley ends next June.

It might be that Brownhill still leaves Burnley at the end of the season – and that could still tempt Leeds with a move at the end of the season, or even beforehand. But he remains a key part of Burnley’s side.

So much so, that Brownhill has captained Burnley in seven of their 12 Premier League matches so far this term. Indeed, he has had a hand in three goals in all competitions – scoring twice in the top tier.

Brownhill would have been a wonderful signing. If you could pinpoint one area of weakness in this Leeds squad, it would be the lack of a natural no.10. Joel Piroe is currently playing in that role, but is a striker.

Leeds tried to sign the likes of Nadiem Amiri, Matt O’Riley and Kenny McLean in the summer – failing to get a deal over the line but a clear indication that Daniel Farke felt Leeds were lacking in the no.10 role.

Brownhill is not a natural 10, either. But his ability to score as an eight would reduce the need for a 10. his ability to score from long range – Brownhill boasts stats of a 10, from deep. He’d be a super signing.
