Junior Firpo has admitted in a video published on Leeds United’s Twitter account that the last few weeks have been the “toughest” of his career – after the Leeds star scored the only goal of the game in a crucial 1-0 win over Southampton.
Firpo, 26, has started the last three Premier League games for Leeds – having started just one League match in the 21 outings prior to his run of three starts. On Saturday, he showed all what he was capable of, named man of the match.
Not only that, but the ex-Barcelona ace scored the biggest goal of his career – eight in total – as Leeds secured a 1-0 win over Southampton. A game that if Leeds were to survive relegation to the Championship, we really needed to win.
In the end, it was a lovely goal that involved Weston McKennie winning the ball back. Crysencio Summerville managing to find Jack Harrison when the odds seemed against him. Harrison’s gorgeous flick, and Firpo bundling the ball home.
Firpo spoke after the match: “Yes, I think so [biggest goal of his career]. We don’t deserve to be here. We were the better team and happily, I scored. The most-frustrating thing is that we played well in the first half but didn’t score.
“But we defended well, I scored and then we managed the game really well. The last few weeks have probably been the toughest of my career. But we have one of the best dressing rooms, and we deserve to be in the Premier League.”

What a win it was. A victory that sees us climb out of the relegation zone. Going into a week where we play in West London twice, it was important to get some momentum. On Tuesday night, we face Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round.
Then, on the weekend, a trip to play against Chelsea – who are struggling for form. Graham Potter’s future hangs in the balance. Leeds will be hoping to gain more momentum on Tuesday before going into another crucial League game.
