Leeds United playing with fire as Illan Meslier stance is shared by reliable journalist

Illan Meslier has had a rough couple of days following Leeds United’s 3-3 draw with Hull City.

Leeds United’s number one Illan Meslier was the key in Leeds’ draw at Hull on Saturday, and not in a good way.

Meslier’s performance was agreed upon by Leeds fans, as pressure is mounting on Daniel Farke to make a change in net after costly mistakes in the Championship.

However, Farke said he wouldn’t ‘finger point’ at Meslier despite the goalkeeper making errors for all three goals at the MKM Stadium.

It’s a compelling argument with the 24-year-old’s future up in the air, but an exit from Elland Road is unlikely.

Graham Smyth will be ‘stunned’ if Illan Meslier departs Leeds United

Journalist, Graham Smyth, stated a goalkeeper should be signed in January but has claimed he would be ‘stunned’ if Meslier left despite his past errors.

Speaking on a Q and A with Yorkshire Evening Post viewers, Smyth highlighted there are currently ‘no plans’ to get a goalkeeper in January.

“The transfer window is open. Why not, at the very least, put proper pressure on Meslier with a signing?” Smyth said.

“Farke often calls on his team to be ruthless but the club should perhaps match that energy with their business if they want to guarantee automatic promotion.

“That said, I don’t believe Leeds have made any plans to sell Meslier this month and I would be stunned if he moved on in January.

“There are also currently no plans to go and get a goalkeeper. I’m quite sure that’s the line Farke will give us when we sit down with him on Thursday as well.”

Meslier is on the final straw at Leeds United

It’s extremely difficult to defend the keeper after his past behaviour, Meslier’s calamitous error at Sunderland is one example.

However, it would be fairly reactionary for Leeds to sign a goalkeeper this January, with other areas needed and four different positions to arrive at Leeds this window.

This doesn’t brush over the fact that Meslier has an awful record in the Championship this season.

Illan Meslier’s statistics in the Championship this season (Ranked out of 24)
Save percentage %66.1% (18th)
Saves per 901.4 (24th)
Goals prevented-1.9 (19th)

It doesn’t reflect well at all on Meslier, however, 14 clean sheets (2nd) in the Championship is his saving grace and Leeds must prioritise other positions.

Meslier is on very thin ice at Elland Road and with the season reaching a crucial stage, he must be at his absolute best.
