Leeds United player told to leave Elland Road as ‘magic’ star finds himself way down the pecking order under Daniel Farke

Leeds United continued their unbeaten run of Championship matches to seven on Saturday lunchtime with a 0-0 draw against Bristol City, remaining in third place in the table.

A frustrating afternoon for Leeds saw Illan Meslier notch a seventh clean sheet in 12 League matches but, the Whites could not take advantage in the final third despite dominating much of Saturday’s outing.

Dan James missed a sitter and Leeds had numerous other chances to score, failing to do so. But given the run of games Leeds have had to tend with since returning from the October break, it is still very solid.

Wins over Sheffield United and Watford and then a point on the road at Ashton Gate is something Leeds and Daniel Farke will be happy with, but one player’s frustration is likely to be on the rise under Farke.

Jon Newsome tells Joe Gelhardt he needs to leave Leeds United

While the tale of this season so far for Leeds has been a lack of cover in midfield an defence, the Whites are well-stocked in attack. Mateo Joseph started the first eight league games, Joel Piroe the last four.

Patrick Bamford is fit again, with the one-time England man third choice and coming on for the last few minutes. It means Joe Gelhardt is now fourth choice, struggling to get a look in under manager Farke.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds [26/10, 12.01PM], former Leeds man Jon Newsome said that for the good of his career, Gelhardt needs to leave Elland Road. He is not going to get the game time he needs at Leeds.

“He is 22 years of age. If he was 32, it might be a bit of a different story. But, you dream of playing, you dream of scoring goals, you dream of playing football matches when you’re a kid,” Newsome said.

Joe Gelhardt is struggling to play, and to make Leeds squad

The opening few weeks looked promising. Gelhardt started in the Carabao Cup against Middlesbrough and was in the squad in all five opening Championship games, coming on at Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite relegation, the numbers show that actually, Gelhardt’s numbers have gone down. He has gone from an young talent described as “magic” by Alan Shearer on Match of the Day, to a Leeds outcast.

He might have been back in the squad on Saturday after being omitted from the last two but he was not used again. Leeds were willing to loan Gelhardt out in the summer, and he should have taken that chance.
