Leo Hjelde is closing in on a move to Sunderland before the end of the January window from Leeds United and the latest update is that a deal will be done by ‘tonight’, signing a deal until June 2028.
Hjelde, 20, has struggled to get game time this term. That is despite starting the opening League game of the season on the left side of the defence. Hooked at half-time during the 2-2 draw with Cardiff City.
He’s not convinced Daniel Farke, and he’s not played in the League since. Yes, a couple of outings in the Carabao Cup – but Hjelde has played more for Norway’s U21 side this term, than he has at Elland Road.
Sunderland’s interest in the Leeds defender emerged over the weekend and then on Monday, it was reported that Sunderland had agreed a fee with Leeds. Now, it is claimed a deal could be done tonight.
That is according to Norwegian reporter Arilas Ould-Saada. The TV2 journalist says that a deal could be done for a fee between £1m and £1.5m for Hjelde, who is set to become Sunderland’s latest new arrival.
The Tweet is translated as: “Agreed with Sunderland on a 4.5-year contract, will probably sign tonight, according to TV2’s information. Hjelde undergoing medical today, sold for £1-1.5M from Leeds United.”

It is a really good move for Hjelde. Joining a club that are fighting for the Championship play-offs at the moment. Beale has a young side, focusing on the future, than the here and now. It suits the Leeds man.
It just never happened for Hjelde at Leeds. His loan at Rotherham was promising, and he was one of a number of young Leeds players expected to break in after relegation. But it has just never happened.
