Leeds United player scores on pre-season debut for new club after leaving Elland Road on loan

Four players have been allowed to leave Leeds United on loan this summer and one of those has scored on debut for his new club, albeit during a pre-season fixture.

Jack Harrison has returned to Everton on loan for a second season as the winger exercised a clause in his contract that allowed him to go out on loan again, having done so last summer to the Merseyside outfit.

Sam Greenwood made the surprise move to join Preston from Leeds, having impressed at Luke Ayling’s Middlesbrough last term. The versatile ace will be hoping to star in a Preston side pushing for the top six.

Darko Gyabi has been welcomed back to Plymouth by Wayne Rooney, with the £5m midfielder spending the second half of last season on loan at Home Park. He will be hoping to finally show what he can offer.

Sonny Perkins scores on debut for boyhood club Leyton Orient

As a 14-year-old, Sonny Perkins left Leyton Orient to join West Ham and then in 2022, he moved to Elland Road. Despite only managing four senior outings, Perkins did score in The FA Cup against Cardiff City.

He went on loan last season to Oxford United but struggled, playing only six times even if he did score. It saw him return to Leeds in January where he could only play for Leeds’ U21 side, instead of a new loan.

Now, he has gone back to Leyton Orient in League One and on Tuesday, he scored for Richie Wellens’ men in their first pre-season game of the summer. The second, in a 7-0 win over non-league Hornchurch.

Leyton Orient loan could be the making of Leeds talent Perkins

Struggling to get game time at Leeds and a poor Oxford loan, versatile attacker Perkins needed to find himself a career kickstart this summer and a return to a club he knows and loves might just help do that.

Perkins has already spoken about his delight at rejoining Orient and getting off to the perfect start, albeit in a friendly against inferior opposition, will give him confidence for the rest of pre-season and 2024-25.

Declan Rice is a big fan of Perkins and finally, Leeds fans might realise the talent the club have on their hands in Perkins over the next 12 months. But it is make or break for Perkins while on loan at Orient.
