Leeds United player Junior Firpo now on verge of making history after Elland Road star shines in massive 6-1 victory

Leeds United have many players currently on international duty but only one is on course to make history this month, in the form of left-back Junior Firpo.

Joe Rodon, Karl Darlow, Max Wober, Ao Tanaka, Sam Chambers, Charlie Crew, Brenden Aaronson, Wilfried Gnonto, Dan James, Manor Solomon and Mateo Joseph are all currently with their nations this month.

But with left-back Firpo, the former Barcelona and Real Betis man is on the verge of doing something with The Dominican Republic, that they as a nation have never done before in qualifying for The Gold Cup.

It looked a formality going into the break, Firpo and his Dominican Republic side had two more games in CONCACAF Nations League qualifying. Winning Group F would see them qualify for The 2025 Gold Cup.

Junior Firpo takes massive step towards making history

Firpo has played as an attacking midfielder, even up front or as one of two 10’s in a 3-4-2-1 system. He has scored three goals in his last two appearances, both which were 5-0 wins over Antigua and Barbuda.

During the early hours of Sunday morning, Firpo and The Dominican Republic took on Dominica and a win would all but guarantee finishing top of Group F and qualification for next summer’s Gold Cup.

They did so, with ease. Firpo’s men opened the scoring, before Dominica equalised. But Firpo’s side went on to control the game and win with comfort, securing a 6-1 win and a fifth win from five appearances.

What The Dominican Republic now need to do to qualify

Winning Group F see The Dominican Republic qualify for the top tier of Nations League games that will see Firpo sit in the same tier as the Aaronson’s United States, Mexico and Jesse Marsch’s Canada.

But it will see them achieve a place in The Gold Cup for the first time. After five games, The Dominican Republic are on 15 points having scored 21 goals in five games and conceding three, with one to play.

They face Bermuda on Tuesday evening but as the table shows, even defeat to second-placed Bermuda will be enough to finish first with Bermuda required to win and score 11 goals against Firpo’s outfit.
