An eighth win from 15 on Saturday afternoon saw Leeds United return to second in the Championship table and only two points behind leaders Sheffield United.
Not only did it see Leeds pick up another league win and immediately bounce back from Wednesday’s defeat to Millwall, but Leeds also clocked up a ninth clean sheet of the season, QPR failing to lay a glove.
Jayden Bogle finished a scrappy goal-mouth scramble inside the first 20 minutes with sliced finish into the top corner from six yards out. Leeds had chances, but it was not until the 95th-minute to make it 2-0.
Joel Piroe netted late on after good work from Isaac Schmidt and Brenden Aaronson down the left flank. Piroe now has more goals than any other Leeds player as a sub in a calendar year, in the club’s history.
Leigh Bromby says Leeds fans were frustrated with one player
Daniel Farke has compared Aaronson to Zinedine Zidane in the past, but the USA star continues to give the ball away. Aaronson last 14 duels on Saturday, the most since Georginio Rutter’s 15 on the first day.
He continues to start, and continues to see out matches. Aaronson clearly has Farke’s trust but Leigh Bromby says fans were left groaning with the USA star, and reckons he could be replaced in January.
“The no.10 is crucial in the way Farke wants to play. Giving it away all the time – you could see it among the fans today and their frustrations – that’s who they play the ball to,” Bromby told BBC Radio Leeds.
“He’s going to have to improve, because today you heard some groans and you could feel it. Every time he gave it away, there was a groan. He did create chances, but you never believe he’s going to score.
“It would be a lot easier if Leeds had a player that is in there, you know what is going to happen. If he can develop, Farke really trusts him, that position has to hit some numbers. It can be improved in January.”
Brenden Aaronson’s moments outweigh his ball retention
The Yorkshire Evening Post actually stated in a post-match piece that it was a good day for Aaronson. The American star did lose 14 duels, the most he has done all season, but he made a real impact in attack.
Players like Aaronson are supposed to lose the ball. Yes, physicality is an issue for Aaronson but his ability to create and his vision is key. His effort against the bar, his pass into Sam Byram for the disallowed goal.
Moments of genius that not many other Leeds players would be able to do. This is a player that creates something out of nothing, but in doing so will lose the ball. Farke at the moment, is okay with that.
