Michael Skubala has raved about Leeds United man Leo Hjelde in words published by Leeds Live after the 21’s drew 2-2 with Liverpool – applauding the Norwegian for his versatility, and his technical ability.
Hjelde has played more minutes with Norway’s U21 side than he has for Leeds’ senior side. He started the season at left-back, widely believed to have a key role under Daniel Farke. Starting, against Cardiff.
But the 20-year-old was subbed at half-time and it was his last outing in the League, his one and only. He played in the Carabao Cup but was also hooked at the break. Hjelde is now back with Leeds U21’s.
It comes after the £1.75m-rated defender was strongly linked with Salernitana in the summer, as per Gianluca Di Marzio. He did impress on Sunday against Liverpool, earning praise from manager Skubala.
“For me, I think his best position is the left of a three if you play a back three.” Skubala said when asked about Hjelde, in quotes on Leeds Live. “He’s so versatile, such a good technician and he’s so calm.
“So I think he can play left-back, he can play left centre half as well. He’s quite fortunate that he can do it all, but I think his ultimate best position is left of a three. He’s a good, young talent,” Skubala added.

There is no doubting that Hjelde has talent. A regular for Norway’s 21’s. He just needs a run of games but ultimately, that is not going to happen this season unless a whole load of injuries come around.
At centre-back – Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk sit ahead of Hjelde. At left-back, Sam Byram is first choice with Stuart Dallas and Junior Firpo closing in on returns from injury. Plenty of competition.
And, plenty of names ahead of Hjelde. He had his chance and blew it in the first half against Cardiff, struggling to cope with the Bluebirds attack. Hjelde will surely wish he ended up at Salernitana.
