Leeds told to pay eight-figure fee for 25-year-old in summer, Kinnear key to a bargain deal

Leeds United were initially told they would have to pay an eight-figure fee to sign Joe Rodon from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

That is according to the Athletic, who report a ‘strong executive relationship’ between Angus Kinnear and Daniel Levy was key to Leeds being able to secure him in a far more favourable deal.

Rodon was signed on a season-long-loan last month in a deal that makes a lot more sense from Leeds‘ point of view, so they are not committing themselves to paying too many big fees while in the Championship.

The loan deal does not include any sort of purchase option next summer, but if Leeds are to get promoted, it would not be a surprise if they moved to sign him permanently.

Leeds did spend big to bring in the likes of Joel Piroe and Ethan Ampadu, but with the much stricter profit and sustainability rules in the Championship, making use of the loan market was smart business.

Leeds were quoted eight-figure fee for Rodon

Rodon was one of two players Leeds brought in on loan from Spurs in the summer, with Djed Spence also moving from North London late in the window.

Spurs paid in excess of £30 million to sign both Rodon and Spence in the last few years, and so for Leeds to be able to get them on loan is superb business.

Having worked together at Spurs, as well as on loan at Rennes in the second half of last season, they should have some good chemistry together, which will only benefit the right-side of Leeds’ defence.

With that in mind, you have to give credit to Kinnear as his relationship with Levy is likely to have seen him at the forefront of negotiations.

On the evidence seen so far, both look like excellent signings for Leeds and hopefully if promotion is secured, both can be signed permanently next year.
