New Leeds signing Diogo Monteiro has enjoyed a wonderful international break, captaining Portugal’s U18 side to the 40th edition of the Porto International Tournament trophy – and has posted on Instagram following the triumph.

Monteiro, 18, only joined Leeds in the January window from Swiss side Servette but has already made a solid start to life at Elland Road. A regular with the 21’s, Monteiro has even been named on the senior bench in four games.

During the break, Monteiro was included in Portugal’s U18 side despite already boasting two Portugal U19 caps. He was given the armband as Portugal faced Austria, Georgia and Finland in a bid to win silverware during the break.

They did just that. Playing three games in the space of just four days, Monteiro started his side’s first game – a 2-2 draw with Austria. He was an unused sub two days later, as Portugal shuffled the pack, to beat Georgia 4-1 (26th).

Then, with the title on the line, Portugal were tasked with beating Finland and they did just that. Again, Monteiro started and finished the game as Sporting Lisbon teen Gustavo Varela scored the only goal of the game to win 1-0.

The young defender’s reputation continues to grow having already broken into Servette’s senior side before joining Leeds in January. You would imagine, that it will not be long before Monteiro is handed his senior Leeds debut.

Winning a trophy during the break in a side that is glittered with young Portuguese stars will not go unnoticed at Leeds. It is unclear if Monteiro will be in action when the 21’s take on Stoke City away from home on Friday night.
