Leeds star may be country's most important player at World Cup - journalist

Journalist Sam Stejskal has told The Athletic that the USMNT system would likely fall apart without Tyler Adams, with the Leeds United star picked as potentially their most important player ahead of the World Cup.

Adams is one of three players within Jesse Marsch’s current squad going to Qatar. Of course, he is joined by countryman Brenden Aaronson, as well as Denmark right-back Rasmus Kristensen at the tournament.

Adams has taken little time to turn himself into an invaluable member of the Leeds side. The 23-year-old has formed an amazing partnership with Marc Roca. And unfortunately, we have had an indication of how important he is to the team, with the Whites really struggling without him against Fulham last month.

It would appear that he has a similarly vital role for his country. Ahead of the World Cup, Stejskal was asked a number of questions about the American side. And when asked to name their most important player, his initial instinct was to opt for the Leeds man.

“I go back and fourth on this all the time actually,” he told The Athletic. “Tyler Adams, who plays for Leeds, is very important to the US and how they play in terms of the amount of ground he covers and defensive work that he does. If you remove him from the system, I think it would kind of fall apart.”

Leeds fans will be very intrigued to see how our players fare on the World Cup stage.

We actually had seven players involved at Euro 2020. So the fact that there are only three heading to the World Cup – none of which were at Leeds before the summer – does perhaps highlight how difficult life at Elland Road was last season.

Having said that, Aaronson and Adams are likely to be key parts of America’s side. And Kristensen is someone who plays in a number of roles for the Danes.

Denmark will hope to make it out of their group – which also includes Australia, France and Tunisia.

The USMNT’s prospects are a little harder to call. Obviously, they are in England’s group, along with Wales and Iran.

We, as Leeds fans, will benefit the sooner the two nations are knocked out. However, it would be brilliant to see the trio go a long way in the tournament.
