Leeds United star Weston McKennie has been likened to Italian legend Andrea Pirlo after his wonderful assist for USA on Monday night – creating the only goal of the game in a 1-0 Nations League win over El Salvador in Florida.

It has been a woeful international break for Leeds. Tyler Adams has been confirmed as going under the knife to fix his hamstring injury. Max Wober and Willy Gnonto have returned from Austria and Italy duty with new injuries.

But for McKennie – even if he is suffering with the flu – has had a great break. He scored a brace in USA’s excellent 7-1 win over Grenada last week and then on Monday night, it was his superb assist that secured a 1-0 win last night.

McKennie’s pass saw Ricardo Pepi score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win. He lasted until injury time in the victory before being taken off, despite having the flu. Goal likened him to Italy icon Pirlo in their player ratings piece.

“On the end of several chances form set pieces, including one he played across the box rather than shooting just before halftime. His big moment, though, was his assist to Pepi. A Pirlo-esque pass from the Leeds United star.”

It was a gorgeous pass, perfectly weighted, for Pepi to run in behind and finish with aplomb – a gorgeous chip over the on-rushing goalkeeper. It was a sign of McKennie that Leeds fans are yet to see, his creative side from midfield.

McKennie has so far impressed, especially in the draw against Manchester United and the win over Wolves, for his work rate and relationship with Tyler Adams. With Adams out, we need McKennie at his best. He was, on Monday.
