Turkish reports say the race to lure Gedson Fernandes to the Premier League from Besiktas is hotting up and at £11.4m, Leeds United should be right in the thick of it – with Tyler Adams’ injury highlighting a lack of midfield depth.
Gedson is a name that many Premier League fans will remember. That is after Jose Mourinho signed the Portugal international at Tottenham on an 18-month loan. But after just a year of those 18 months, he returned to Benfica.
Last summer, he finally left Benfica and joined Besiktas on a permanent basis and he has since been impressive. In a side that also includes Dele Alli, Nathan Redmond and Arthur Masuaku, Gedson has been the midfield heartbeat.
Missing just one of Besiktas’ 30 games this season, Gedson has helped his side win 17 games. Besiktas are on a run of five consecutive wins and Gedson has been crucial to that – starting all five games. His form has caught the eye.
Indeed, Turkish outlet Fanatik say Premier League sides Villa, Fulham and Palace are keen – as are Lazio and Jose Mourinho’s Roma. A fee of £11.4m is required – and such is his form and price tag, Leeds should be interested.

Gedson is the kind of player perfect to supply cover at Elland Road. The kind of player that can play in holding midfield, as a box-to-box Weston McKennie type – or even as a 10. Mourinho said he is “really, really good”.
So, with Gedson still only 24 and boasting the technical ability and versatility to play in this Leeds side, a fee of £11.4m would be a bargain. Leeds have got to throw their hat into the ring to land him, due to Adams’ injury.
Adams being sidelined has highlighted a lack of midfield options. McKennie and Marc Roca remain first choice, but really, the only two clear cut options. Adam Forshaw will go this summer – and Gedson would be a solid signing.
