Tim Sherwood has told Sky Sports News (6/2; 15:40) that Leeds United should turn to Marcelo Bielsa after making the decision to sack Jesse Marsch as head coach.
Leeds announced on Monday afternoon that Marsch has been dismissed with the Whites just outside the bottom three in the Premier League.
Marsch never really managed to fully silence his critics during his time at Elland Road. He is clearly a fantastic person. And it would have been amazing to see him prove a success at Leeds. However, it unfortunately appears to have been the right call from the board to make the change.
Sherwood suggests Bielsa return after Leeds sack Marsch
Of course, just as crucial is the decision over his successor. Making a change last season seemed to pay off as Leeds ultimately stayed up. And it needs to be just as impactful this time around.
Several names have been mentioned by fans. But obviously, there is one name that would be the romantic choice for supporters. And that is Bielsa.
The Argentinian left last year after an extremely successful spell. And despite leaving with relegation seemingly on the cards, he remains a hugely popular figure amongst the fanbase.
It would be a surprise if the board turned to Bielsa again. But Sherwood has suggested that he may be the right man to turn the team’s fortunes around.
“I think the fans would like Bielsa back. He ain’t a bad manager, is he. He obviously wants to get back in, had the conversation with Everton. I don’t think that would have been the right one, the way he plays,” he told Sky Sports News.
“Leeds players, a large number of that squad know how he plays, they’re used to it, they’re acclimatised to the way he plays. So give Bielsa it back.”
It is hard not to feel that Bielsa coming back would provide the kind of lift the club needs. It says everything about how loved he was that supporters continued to chant his name after heavy defeats against both Liverpool and Tottenham at the end of his tenure.
Perhaps the more sensible thing would be to remember those defeats when considering whether we want Bielsa back.
But while there remains a chance of the Argentinian returning, it is difficult to not dream of Bielsa getting the chance to finish what he started during his first three years at Elland Road.
