Leeds players and Barry Douglas react as out-on-loan Whites star posts bad news

Out-on-loan Leeds star Tyler Roberts has taken to Instagram to underline his heartbreak at missing out on being a part of the Wales squad to go to the 2022 Qatar World Cup – prompting reaction from Leeds players, and Barry Douglas.

Roberts, 23, went on loan to Championship side QPR in the summer for the 22-23 campaign. A move that he may have felt would give him the game time to ensure his place in Robert Page’s side. He was expected to be picked for Wales.

But he has managed nine starts for Michael Beale’s high-flying side since the move to Loftus Road. He has clocked up 13 games in all competitions, scoring twice. He has picked up an injury, but Beale was confident he would be picked.

However, Page confirmed his 26-man squad this week – and Roberts was missing. Perhaps, because of injury. Maybe, a lack of game time and therefore, momentum and solid form. Roberts took to Instagram following the announcement.

Roberts misses out on Wales squad: Leeds players and Douglas react

A sad moment in what has been a tricky couple of years for Roberts. Numerous injuries, and in and out of the Leeds side since promotion – and even before that. The £4m Leeds man just needs to remain injury free to realise his ability.

Page’s attacking options – of which he has picked – include Gareth Bale, obviously. Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson is in, as is Bournemouth’s Kieffer Moore. Another out-on-loan Leeds player, Dan James, has also been picked.

What Roberts might question is the inclusion of Cardiff’s Mark Harris. A player with just five caps for Wales, and three goals in 20 appearances for Cardiff this season. But it might be, that Roberts has missed out due to injury.

Plenty responded to Roberts’ post on Instagram, including Leeds stars Adam Forshaw and Stuart Dallas. Douglas – who remains at Polish side Lech Poznan but is on crutches – told Roberts to “stay strong”. Kalvin Phillips also commented.
