Robin Koch has told a Frankfurt press conference this week that he found himself in a “difficult position” at Leeds United following our relegation to the Championship – claiming it was a “gut feeling” to join the Bundesliga club.
Koch, 26, has joined Frankfurt until the end of the season, on loan. But, it pretty much ends his Leeds spell – with his Leeds contract due to expire in June 2024. It means after the loan, he will become a free agent at Elland Road.
It is more than likely that Frankfurt complete a move to sign Koch on a free. They will be able to do so from January 1, when in the final six months of his deal. Koch will non-English can talk to clubs on a pre-contract, at that point.
But for now, Koch will be focusing on getting fit and impressing during pre-season in order to win a starting spot with the Bundesliga side. He told a press conference this week that it was simply, a gut feeling, to join Frankfurt.
“I am extremely happy to be here. For me it was a difficult situation in Leeds. I needed a bit of distance and time to think about my next step. It was a gut decision. I worked my way into the position of leader at Leeds,” Koch said.

It is a brilliant move for Koch. It has been regularly said that Koch sees himself as a Germany defender and ahead of Euro 2024, playing regularly in the Bundesliga is going to help his cause. He is likely to be first choice at the back.
He will need replacing at Leeds. Charlie Cresswell is set to return to training soon, after helping England U21’s win the European Championships. Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is a target. So it remains to be seen, this summer.
