Leeds want to sign ‘tough’ player that Jarrod Bowen said was his hardest ever opponent

As the search for a new left-back continues into the second half of January, Leeds United’s pursuit has seen them target Tottenham defender Ben Davies – a player that Jarrod Bowen has raved about.

Davies, 30, is in the final 18 months of his contract at Spurs and while he is not first choice at the North London outfit – he is still a crucial part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad. He has played 16 times this term.

Whether that be at left-back, or in the middle of the defence – the 85-time man is far too good for the second tier of English football. But he has dropped out of Spurs’ starting XI since Postecoglou arrived.

Destiny Udogie is first choice on the left, Micky van de Ven in the middle. Leeds are admirers of the Wales star and would love him to join what is a growing contingent of Rob Page’s side at Elland Road.

But even if Leeds, Davies and Spurs wanted to do a deal, he’d be far too expensive for a second-tier club to sign him. Maybe, if the interest remains until the summer and Leeds go up, it could be done.

Leeds will still surely need a left-back come the end of the season, no matter what division the Whites find themselves in – with only a loan addition likely this term. Ben Johnson is only wanted temporarily.

Davies continues to shine in the Premier League and even though he might only be a fringe player, continues to win plaudits. Gary Lineker recently declared himself impressed by the old Swansea ace.

Back in 2017, he caught the attention of West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen – while the England star was still at Hull. Asked for his toughest opponent, Bowen named Davies, citing the Wales star as “tough” to face.

“Ben Davies when we played Tottenham,” Bowen told The Mail, when asked for the name of his toughest opponent. He continued: “He is experienced. It was tough, but still a very enjoyable experience for me.”
