Leeds now want to sign 21-year-old from Euro club, director says there is plenty of interest

Leeds United are reportedly closely monitoring the situation of Mjällby AIF goalkeeper Noel Törnqvist.

That is according to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, who report Törnqvist’s performances this season have caught the eye of several clubs, including Leeds.

It is said that Leeds had their scouts in attendance at Mjällby AIF’s 1-0 defeat to AIK Solna last weekend, something which their club director Hasse Larsson has confirmed.

Larsson spoke of interest from both Leeds, Copenhagen and two Dutch clubs regarding Törnqvist, whose contract at Mjällby AIF runs until the summer of 2026.

It is not the first time Törnqvist has been linked with a move to Elland Road, with his agent claiming all the way back in 2018 Leeds had made an offer after a trial period.

Club director confirms interest in Törnqvist

It would appear Leeds have reignited their interest in the young shotstopper, with Mjällby AIF chief Larsson going public with the amount of interest in him.

He said: “That’s right. There were two more clubs, two Dutch clubs, who were also there to watch. There is an interest, absolutely. We’ll see what happens, we haven’t received anything concrete. We have only received requests.

“I think we have a contract for four more years. It is difficult to answer [of retaining him beyond January], but we are happy to keep him for a while longer. Then we’ll see, it depends on what comes.”

Leeds already have an abundance of young goalkeepers at their disposal with long-time number one Illan Meslier still only 23 himself.

On the periphery of the first team squad also includes Kristoffer Klaesson and Dani van den Heuvel, neither of which appear close to making their breakthrough.

Törnqvist, however, now already has an abundance of experience at a decent level having made 30 appearances for Mjällby AIF, and with all the interest in him, he is clearly highly rated.
