Leeds now have perfect chance to sign Europa League finalist in swap, thanks to Joe Gelhardt

A left-back is top of the agenda for Daniel Farke with Leeds United duo Sam Byram and Junior Firpo both failing to rid themselves of injury prone reputations – and Rangers ace Borna Barisic is a target.

The 31-year-old has entered the final six months of his contract at Rangers, and Leeds want to lure him south of the border. The Whites have competition though, with clubs from Italy, France and Spain keen.

Barisic has spent the last five and a half years at Ibrox, joining them in the summer of 2018 under Steven Gerrard. 53 assists in 224 Rangers games, a Europa League finalist. Easy to see why Leeds are keen.

Rangers want to keep him, though. They want to offer him a new deal in order to fend off interest in his services this month. But perhaps, Leeds have the perfect opportunity to tempt Rangers into a sale.

That is because Rangers are supposedly looking at Joe Gelhardt. The Leeds youngster is struggling for game time at Elland Road, with Georginio Rutter, Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford all ahead of Gelhardt.

Leeds have chance of signing Rangers’ Borna Barisic in a swap

Rangers have allowed Sam Lammers to go on loan to FC Utrecht, and that could see them step up a move for a striker before the end of the window. Perhaps, they will make a move for Gelhardt, soon.

So, surely, if Leeds are intent on luring Barisic to Elland Road, they could offer the Scottish side Gelhardt in return for Barisic. Whether it could be a player-plus-cash deal, is up for debate. But there is a chance.

Rangers want Gelhardt, we want Barisic and therefore, there is surely a potential deal that can be done between the clubs. It might just give Leeds the chance to land a left-back before the end of January.
