Leeds United have joined the race to sign Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton with Newcastle United and West Ham also keen.

That is according to Football League World, who claim the Whites have sent scouts to watch Wharton in action on several occasions this season but a summer move could hinge on staying in the Premier League.

Wharton enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Ewood Park in 2022/23, establishing himself as a mainstay in Blackburn’s midfield during the final seven matches of the season.

The talented teenager plays alongside his brother Scott at Rovers as they missed out on a place in Championship play-offs on goal difference.

In total, Wharton made 22 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing two assists, with his favoured position sat just in front of the defence.

Leeds keen on Wharton move

With Archie Gray, Darko Gyabi and Lewis Bate all on the books, Leeds are well stocked for young midfielders and if the Whites are to go down on Sunday, all three could play a big role in the Championship.

That said, Wharton quickly established himself as a fan favourite at Blackburn and is clearly a big talent, with Newcastle and West Ham already beginning to circle.

It is reported that Leeds’ pursuit of Wharton will depend on whether they remain in the Premier League, but there is also surely little reason why they couldn’t make a move even if they are relegated.

Leeds are likely to see a huge turnover of players in the summer and therefore it is likely they will have money to spend and picking off some of the Championship’s best is a strategy they must look to enforce.

His performances at Blackburn suggest Wharton certainly falls under that category and he would represent a very smart signing.
