San Francisco 49ers Enterprises made their first real big decision as majority shareholders of Leeds United earlier today.

The Whites confirmed the appointment of Nick Hammond as an interim football advisor, with the former Newcastle United and Celtic director having signed a three-month deal.

Hammond is set to take charge of Leeds’ summer transfer window, overseeing both incomings and outgoings in what is expected to be a busy period in preparation for life back in the Championship.

The 55-year-old will take a similar role to that of Victor Orta, who was sacked from his position as sporting director in May after a series of poor decisions.

49ers completed their full takeover of the club last Friday and know that plenty of work is required this summer, thus making the decision to bring in an experienced football figure like Hammond.

49ers offer signs of optimism for Leeds

Much of the talk around social media among supporters has been on the need for an appointment of a director of football.

Leeds have instead been focusing their attention towards a new manager to replace Sam Allardyce, and as such, the arrival of Hammond takes all the pressure off.

49ers and Angus Kinnear are set to undertake a thorough review of Leeds’ football operations in the coming months and while that is conducted in the background, Hammond will be taking care of the on the field matters.

A long-term DoF appointment is expected to be made in October and by bringing in Hammond now on a short-term basis, it clearly shows Leeds’ new owners know what they are doing.

Hammond’s announcement this morning came very much out of the blue, suggesting they are keen to keep business under wraps – a very effective way to run a football club.

On the contrary, previous owner Andrea Radrizzani was very much someone who liked to make himself known and heard, with social media gaffes a frequent source of embarrassment.

Of course, there is still plenty of work to be done in the coming weeks, but this is a good start and more of the same should set Leeds up for a positive season.
