Little over a year from his torrid time at Leeds United, Weston McKennie was on the score sheet for Juventus on Tuesday night in the Champions League and Leeds fans have responded.

Rewind just over 18 months ago and Leeds pulled off what they thought was a transfer coup, in landing McKennie. A close friend of Tyler Adams and a teammate of current Leeds man Brenden Aaronson.

Leeds fought off competition from a number of big clubs, mostly from the Premier League, to land the Juventus star on loan. If Leeds stayed up, they would have signed McKennie permanently for £34.3m.

A silver lining however, in Leeds’ relegation. They did not have to sign McKennie as relegation occurred, with McKennie flopping in English football. Question marks emerged over his fitness and his quality.

McKennie thriving at Juventus since returning from Leeds

He returned to the Old Lady that summer and was expected to go, but McKennie has rebuilt his spell at Juventus and last season, clocked up an impressive 10 assists in 38 games for the Italian giants.

This season, he is a fringe player after being linked with the exit door again but got a start on Tuesday night in Juventus’ first Champions League game of the season against Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.

He scored from close range, McKennie’s first goal since leaving Leeds and returning to Juventus, as they ran out 3-1 winners. News reached Leeds fans on social media and many are shocked by McKennie.

Even this summer, Premier League clubs wanted to sign McKennie

Everton opened talks to sign McKennie in the summer in a move that could have reunited the midfielder with Jack Harrison. Back in January, Erik ten Hag is said to have wanted McKennie at Manchester United.

McKennie is likely to return to the Premier League at some point but clubs will be wary of his form while at Leeds and indeed, his fitness. It continues to be a question mark that plagues the USA international.

But scoring goals in the Champions League, the fifth in his 25th Champions League career outing, will remind those keeping tabs on him he can do it given the right tools. Something he didn’t get at Leeds.
