Leeds could already have perfect Nadiem Amiri alternative in 20-year-old gem, after Thursday

Sean McGurk has been superb for the 21’s this season. A player that has always been destined to shine, but there were perhaps question marks over when that was finally going to happen, at Leeds United.

Slight in build, renowned for his red-haired locks, McGurk is best as a no.10. An attacking midfielder with raw technical ability and vision. The ability to score a goal, too. Consistency was missing, with the 21’s.

Coming into the 23-24 season, McGurk had amassed just six goals and four assists in 42 outings for the second string. Not enough for an attacking midfielder if he is to catch the eye of a certain Daniel Farke.

But his form over the last couple of months will have certainly done that. Often seen in senior training, McGurk has taken his game to a new level in his six appearances this season. Five, in Premier League 2.

He has three league goals and an assist. On Thursday, the Premier League International Cup began. He started up top, in a bit of a false nine role. Straight away, he nutmegged a defender, pulling a shot wide.

That technicality, that flair, that footballing intelligence on show straight away. He hit the post, before finishing superbly only to be offside. A constant thorn in Nice’s defence, as Leeds secured a 2-0 win.

McGurk on fire for the U21’s: Ideal Amiri alternative for Leeds

Charlie Allen opened the scoring, and McGurk got his fourth of the season – a neat first touch and with his weaker left-foot, finding the top corner. McGurk is the gem of the U21 side at the moment. On fire.

Leeds did pretty well in the summer. Goalkeeper issue, solved. Luke Ayling competition, secured. Joe Rodon adds centre-back depth. Three new central midfielders and a striker that can score – Joel Piroe.

Left-back has been semi-addressed, with Sam Byram coming in and Junior Firpo back soon. But the 10 role, McGurk’s natural position, did not get addressed. Leeds tried. Nadiem Amiri travelled to Yorkshire.

A bid went in for Celtic’s Matt O’Riley. But a 10 has not arrived. So, if Leeds are going to look within their own ranks – surely, the club and Farke have got to give McGurk a call-up. A potential Amiri alternative.
