Leeds United have confirmed that left-back Scott Godden has signed a new one-year deal at Elland Road to keep him with the club until the summer of 2024 – and state that he will be promoted into the club’s Under-21 side.
Godden, 18, has starred for our Under-18’s over the last couple of years – clocking up 38 appearances. In that time, he has had a hand in four goals from the left side of defence. He is yet to make a breakthrough, to the Under-21’s.
But he has earned another 12 months at Leeds after an impressive 22-23 campaign, and the Leeds statement says that he will be focusing on preparing for the new season – ahead of a the Premier League 2 campaign in 23-24.
It is a clear sign that Leeds are planning to embed Godden, a player to have captained Wales at youth level and has three caps with the Wales Under-19’s, into the second string. More than a hint, that he has been promoted up.
Leeds confirm Godden deal, will be promoted to club’s Under-21 side
Seeing a left-back sign on instantly perks the ears of Leeds fans. Whether Godden is good enough, or has the potential to reach the senior squad remains to be seen. There is likely to be a long way to – but the pathway is clear.
Leeds are likely to wave goodbye to Junior Firpo. Leo Hjelde has interest from Serie A side Salernitana and Pascal Struijk is not a left-back, naturally. Phil Hay reports there is interest from Leeds in Charlie Taylor, and Ryan Manning.
So, Leeds are likely to be after a left-back this summer but if they fail to bring one in under new boss Daniel Farke – they do have an impressive talent in the ranks, in the form of Godden. He will be focusing on being an U21 regular.
