Kalvin Phillips has engaged in full training with the England squad after the Manchester City midfielder landed in Qatar ahead of the World Cup – and Leeds United star Luke Ayling has responded to one of Phillips’ posts on Instagram.
Phillips, 26, has endured a difficult six months. Leaving Leeds for the first time since breaking into the Whites side from the academy, the England star joined Manchester City in the summer. But a shoulder injury has limited his game time.
Indeed, Phillips has been forced to undergo surgery on his shoulder. It came after just three sub appearances for the League champions against West Ham, Sevilla and Dortmund. He is now fit, playing against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
Despite his lack of game time, Gareth Southgate has included Phillips in his 26-man World Cup squad. But having played such a crucial part in the run to the Euro 2020 final, it is likely that Jude Bellingham has overtaken Phillips.
Nevetheless, he is with the England squad in Qatar – alongside another ex-Leeds player in Ben White. He took to Instagram with a couple of pictures from England training, with the second session taking place on Thursday morning.

As stated, Phillips is more than likely to start the World Cup campaign on the bench. Declan Rice remains first choice despite West Ham’s woeful start to the season, while Jude Bellingham has been captaining Dortmund on occasion.
But there is every chance that Gareth Southgate turns to the £45million man off the bench. Against Iran, that is unlikely, unless England have an impressive lead and Southgate looks to get some much-needed minutes in his legs.
With Phillips posting pictures from England’s training base at Al Wakrah, Ayling responded – sharing what he had noticed about the ex-Leeds man with a three-word verdict: “Looking well Phil”. Rice and Barry Douglas also responded.
