Lee Bowyer has told TalkSPORT (June 6, 12PM) that he is hopeful Leeds United give him a phone call this summer to become the club’s next manager – and is confident that if they do call, he could guide the Whites to promotion.

Bowyer, 46, has been out of a job since last summer, when he left Birmingham City. The midfielder is of course well-liked at Elland Road, having spent seven years with the Whites as a player. He clocked up 265 games in that time.

The English gaffer does have plenty of experience in management, clocking up more than 200 games as a manager. He spent three years in charge of Charlton, clocking up 157 matches as manager. Another 59 at Birmingham City.

Bowyer spoke of how the Leeds board did make contact with him after sacking Javi Gracia, but chose to go with Sam Allardyce due to his experience. Asked if he would take the job now, he says he’d love it – and gain promotion.

“Without going into too much detail, there was a message or two exchanged. They went with Big Sam because of experience,” Bowyer said. “I’d like to think we would have a conversation at some stage, put something together.

“I’ve got an understanding and a connection with the club. If I got the call, I would love to go there. I’d jump at the chance. I know the Championship now, I understand it. I believe that, if I went there, I’d get them promoted again.”

Is Bowyer the man to turn to? Well, he is well-liked at Leeds and he certainly knows the Championship. Of his 216 games in management, 102 have come in the second tier. He also won promotion from League One, in the play-offs.

But would Leeds fans be happy with Bowyer? Or would they want a manager that has proven himself at a higher level. One where an identity of how to play is clear. But clearly, Bowyer is confident and has experience at this level.
