‘Just not quite’… £7m Leeds United player disappoints on international duty for Wales

Leeds United defensive midfielder Ethan Ampadu was in action for Wales against Armenia on Saturday.

The performance of Ampadu was not particularly good, and the local media criticised him.

What’s the story?

Well, Wales played out a 1-1 draw with Armenia away from home in European Championship Qualifying Group D on Saturday.

Leeds United defensive midfielder Ethan Ampadu started for Wales. The 23-year-old was deployed in central midfield in a 3-4-3 formation.

Ampadu started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes. He earned a yellow card and could not make a massive impact in the middle of the park.

Against Armenia, the youngster took two shots and one was on target, played one key pass, had a pass accuracy of 87.5%, won two headers, and took 47 touches.

WalesOnline gave Ampadu 5 out of 10 and noted: “Missed a great chance to head home a winner at the end. 

“Should perhaps have done a little more to close down Lucas Zelarayan for the first goal too. Another to just not quite reach the level needed.”

Leeds United and Wales star Ethan Ampadu will bounce back

I am confident that Ethan Ampadu will bounce back from the disappointment with Wales. The Leeds United star has a strong mentality, and I believe that he will be back to his best.

Wales as a team struggled against Armenia. It was one of the worst performances from The Dragons in their Euro 2024 qualification campaign.

So, I do not think that we can blame Ampadu too much. Every player has bad games.

We have seen enough of Ampadu to know that he is a very good and capable defensive midfielder.

I believe that the £7 million (The London Evening Standard) 23-year-old is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Championship and has been one of the best players for Leeds this season.

Ampadu has made 16 appearances in the Championship this season. Daniel Farke’s side are third in the league table with 31 points from 16 matches, eight points behind Leicester City and Ipswich Town, who are first and second respectively.
