Junior Firpo has applauded Diogo Monteiro on Instagram after the centre-back helped Leeds United’s under-21s to a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough on Sunday.
Leeds secured the win which takes them to within one point of the title. They face West Brom on Friday. And avoiding defeat will be enough to ensure that Paco Gallardo’s side seal promotion.

An own goal saw Leeds equalise against Boro. Archie Gray and Sonny Perkins would then score after the break to ensure that the Whites got the three points.

It was another positive display from the youngsters. It would be too much of a stretch to suggest that they have ensured that a miserable weekend has ended on a high. But it is good to see a positive result.

Diogo Monteiro continues to catch the eye and impress for the under-21s. He was one of the arrivals in the January window. And he has stood out since coming in.
He is yet to get his chance in the first-team. And, given our current predicament, it is hard to see Javi Gracia turning to him before the campaign concludes.
But there is probably an argument that he cannot be much worse. Robin Koch had a torrid afternoon against Fulham on Saturday. The German was so poor in possession, by his standards. And Fulham were still able to carve Leeds open on a few occasions.
Of course, Gracia is not going to pick Monteiro ahead of Koch. But the signs are positive for the future.
The Portuguese has since taken to Instagram to comment on the youngsters’ win today. And amongst those to reply was Junior Firpo, with the left-back praising the 18-year-old…

Diogo Monteiro will probably be one of the players who benefits if Leeds do go down. He appears to be knocking on the door at a time when so few first-team players are actually impressing.
It may not be Monteiro who gets in. But you could certainly say that Gracia could do a lot worse than include a number of those young players in the match day squad on Tuesday.
