Journalist says Sheffield United now in race for top Leeds target, £15m will seal the deal

Sheffield United have joined Leeds United in the race for Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.

That is according to Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse, who reports a deal of £15 million could be enough to tempt Coventry into selling this summer.

Hamer is into the final 12 months of his contract at Coventry and as of yet, has given no indication he will be signing a new one.

Coventry boss Mark Robins admitted after his side’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester City on Sunday that Hamer’s future remains up in the air, but is keen to see it resolved quickly.

Leeds have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old throughout the window but will face Premier League competition, with Burnley, Fulham and now Sheffield United keen.

Sheffield United are set to be in the market for a new midfielder with Sander Berge having joined Burnley in a deal worth around £12 million.

Despite having won promotion last season, the Blades are extremely hamstrung financially and have also lost another of their key players in Iliman Ndiaye to Marseille.

If they are to have any chance of staying up, Sheffield United simply have to replace both of those players, though it remains to be seen whether they can afford Coventry’s £15 million asking price.

If Tyler Adams is to make the £20 million switch to Chelsea, Leeds should look to reinvest those funds straight into Hamer, who is arguably the best midfielder in the division.

Beating off Premier League competition will be tough, but Leeds arguably have as good a chance of being in that division as Sheffield United in 12 months’ time.
