Jordan Henderson is supposedly tempted by a move to Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq but Liverpool’s demands for their skipper could actually help Leeds United seal a bargain deal for Nat Phillips – if he does move to Saudi Arabia.
Henderson, 33, has two years left on his contract at Liverpool, which is worth a huge £200,000 a week. Sky Sports say Gerrard’s team are offering a wage that sees him triple his wages, on a two-year deal with the option of a third.
But Fabrizio Romano reports that Al-Ettifaq were hoping to land Henderson on a free, despite the two years left on his contract. Liverpool are not having that, and want a fee of £10m. It means the Reds could receive a surprise fee.
Phil Hay has reported that Leeds want Phillips, but would have to pay a fee of £10m to get him. So, if Liverpool get a shock fee in the sale of Henderson, especially with Al-Ettifaq not intending on paying it, then it may help Leeds.
Henderson move to Saudi Arabia could help Leeds deal for Phillips
Leeds are likely to be in the market for a right-sided central defender. Rasmus Kristensen is set to join Robin Koch and Diego Llorente in leaving the club this month. He did not travel to Norway with a move to Roma close to done.
That would leave Leeds with just Charlie Cresswell as a right-footed centre-back. Against Manchester United in Oslo, Leeds relied upon youngsters Jeremiah Mullen and Kris Moore. Diogo Monteiro was an unused substitute.
So, the interest and a possible move for Phillips is understandable. Leeds will feel £10m is expensive for the Bolton-born star, but Henderson moving to Saudi Arabia means Liverpool will receive a fee – and help reduce Phillips’ fee.
